Center for Wooden Boats Wedding

Last summer I had the pleasure of being contacted by Sarah and Paul regarding their upcoming wedding at the Center for Wooden Boats on Lake Union.  Their wedding was only two-and-a-half months away, and travelling for work was in Sarah’s immediate future.  Needless to say, we needed to get started on their ceremony and wrap up details quickly before Sarah left the country.  Fortunately, we  had the help of my friend and colleague Kelli Bielema at Shindig Events.  Everything was more or less in place except the officiant – me!  Sarah and Paul are a laid back couple but they clearly wanted something special and unique for this ceremony.  Together, we wrote something they loved and the ceremony turned out perfectly — including random pauses for the planes taking off and landing on the lake.  Speaking of planes, family and friends flew in from around the country.  One friend made Sarah’s beautiful bouquet (see below).  The music was provided by Swing Soiree and the food from Herban Feast.  Beautiful couple, beautiful setting, fabulous wedding!  Enjoy the photos from Sarah and Paul’s Center for Wooden Boats wedding below.

Kayak Wedding on Lake Union

A few months back I was contacted by Al and Teya from Lithuania.  As we Skyped, they explained to me that they were coming back to the U.S. and wanted to get married in kayaks in Seattle.  They also wanted their officiant to be in a kayak to perform the ceremony.  Their vision included having a spot where those who didn’t want to kayak could watch from land.  I enthusiastically agreed to be their “sea-going” officiant and offered to research some options for them.

The first location that I thought of for a great kayaking destination, and also a location where guests could watch from land was Foster Island in the Arboretum.  I have taken many walks on the boardwalk out to Foster Island and I always see people kayaking and rowing through these beautiful wetlands.  I took my dogs down there one Sunday afternoon just to check out our options.  I saw many charming docks and platforms where guests could watch the ceremony and that we could easily kayak to.  I took some pictures and sent them to Al and Teya in Lithunia along with kayak rental information.

After discussing a few small changes we agreed on our route and made plans to meet at a location on Lake Union where we would launch our kayaks.

The big wedding day came and WOW!!! the weather was really bad.  It was pouring rain, the wind was blowing and it was cold.  I wasn’t sure I still wanted to be a part of this adventure and spoke with Al about a possible plan B.  (By the way, I always have a plan B.)  He was persistent, however, and after agreeing to shorten our time on the water I decided to join everyone.

Please enjoy the following pictures of this amazing wedding day of Al and Teya!

Seattle Wedding Officiants is a Family Affair!

Two summers ago I was the officiant for Michael and Euneka, who were married at Maroni Meadows in Snohomish.  As is usually the case, I meet friends and family members of the couples I marry as well.  Euneka and Michael both had lovely families and it was a fun day getting to know all of them.

This past summer of 2013 I had the pleasant surprise of receiving a call from Euneka’s mother, who I had met at Euneka’s wedding the previous summer.  It turned out that she was also getting married and wanted to have me officiate her wedding at the Monte Cristo Ballroom.  I was so honored to be invited to be the officiant for Harriett and James’ wedding.  Even better was that I got to see Euneka and Michael and their families once again.

Pentagon Announces Same-Sex Spouse Benefits

I am so proud of Washington state for pushing referendum 74 through in December of 2012, making our state the tenth jurisdiction in the United States (9 states, plus the District of Columbia) to extend the freedom to marry to same-sex couples.  Since that time I have had the honor  and privilege of officiating dozens of same-sex weddings for couples from all over the country.

Following is an update from the Department of Defense who has voted to extend federal benefits to same-sex spouses of military service members.  Congratulations on another victory!

Courtesy of NBC News.com September 3, 2013:

“The Department of Defense announced a plan on Wednesday to extend a range of federal benefits to same-sex spouses of military service members starting Sept. 3.

The Pentagon will extend to legally married same-sex couples the same privileges and programs that are provided to legally married heterosexual couples, including benefits tied to health care, housing, and family separation allowance, compensation paid to military members when their dependents can’t live with them at their permanent duty station.

“The Department of Defense remains committed to ensuring that all men and women who serve in the U.;SD. military, and their families, are treated fairly and equally as the law directs,” the Pentagon said in its announcement Wednesday.

On Tuesday, a senior official told NBC News that service members who are stationed in one of the 37 states where same-sex marriage is illegal will be offered up to 10 days of leave so they can travel to one of the 13 states, plus the District of Columbia, that grant same-sex marriage licenses.

All entitlements are retroactive to June 26, 2013 the date of the Supreme Court’s ruling that a key provision of the Defense of Marriage Act, or DOMA, is unconstitutional.

Travel-themed Wedding at Thornewood Castle

On August 19, 2012 I had the honor and pleasure of officiating the wedding of Greg and Tammy.  Their venue, Thornewood Castle, is one of my favorites.  The grounds are lush with beautiful gardens and rolling lawns.  In addition, there is statuary tucked in and around the gardens reminiscent of an old English estate.

Greg and Tammy’s passion for travel inspired a travel theme for their wedding.  Travel details included vintage suitcases and postcards on each table.  I read one of my favorite stories reflecting their love for each other titled, “Love Monkey”.  It’s about two monkeys that travel the world with their hearts in their hands, find each other and fall in love.  It was perfect for Greg and Tammy and brought on a few tears and lots of chuckles too.

Greg and Tammy added some details to their wedding that were unique and lovely.  They used mason jars planted with seasonal plants for their aisle markers.  They offered a selection of yummy cakes rather than one large wedding cake.  Tammy works at a dentist’s office and included a jar of toothbrushes on her candy table!

I had so much fun meeting and working with Greg and Tammy to plan a wedding ceremony that would suit them.  Congratulations to a fun-loving and passionate couple!

Winter Wedding at the Salish Lodge

Last night wrapped up my 2012 wedding season, and the wedding was nothing short of remarkable.  I love small, intimate weddings that feel cozy and warm.  Michael and Dana’s winter wedding included only immediate family and was held in the Cliffside Room overlooking the falls at the Salish Lodge and Spa.

This room is perfect for small gatherings and has tons of potential for decorating.  Elizabeth Hikida of Elizabeth Designs provided the flowers, which were lovely.

My favorite detail?  The cake!  It was lovely with it’s bling and finishing touch of sprinkles that resembled fresh snow.

Getting Your Name Changed After Marriage

Now that you know how to get your marriage license application completed and get your marriage license at the courthouse (Getting Your Marriage License Made Easy), it’s time to talk about getting your name changed.  To get your name changed with the DMV, passport office, work insurance, etc. you must present a certified copy of your marriage license.  This process is even easier than getting your license.  I explain the steps in my consultations, but I also go over it again the day of your wedding.  A lot can happen between our consultation and your wedding day; months go by, paperwork gets misplaced, etc.  This is why I revisit this topic as we are signing your marriage license after the ceremony.

The first thing you need to know is that not all brides decide to change their last name. I would estimate that approximately 90% of my brides change their names to their husband’s last name. The choice to change your last name or keep it is entirely up to you and there is no law that says you have to change it. I had one bride tell me that she was the last one in her family with her father’s name and wanted to continue his legacy, and therefore decided to keep her maiden name.   You also have the option of hyphenating your last name with your husbands.  But again, you can keep your last name if you wish.

The form below is included in the marriage packet you will pick up at the courthouse.  It is very straightforward with the exception of a few things.  First take a look at the form and then read on below.

Changing your name after marriage, Seattle Wedding Officiants, Elaine Way, Seattle Wedding, King County marriage license

You will fill this form out and send it in 10 days after your wedding day.  By the way, you have up to a year to send this form in, so there is no rush.  For example, you can take care of  this after you return from your honeymoon.

It’s important to know that the courthouse gets especially busy in the summer months and they need to receive your marriage license before they can process your certified copy request.  It’s up to your officiant to forward the marriage license to the courthouse after the wedding.  I take care of this either the same day or the very next business day after the wedding.  If you are in a hurry to get your certified copy you can go to the courthouse with your completed marriage license and pick up your certified copy in person.  Only one of you has to go.

Filling out the certified copy request is fairly straight forward:

  1. Address:  Enter the address where you want your certified copies mailed.  It is acceptable to use your parent’s address if you are in the military and move around a lot or are in some other kind of transition.
  2. E-mail: Either of your e-mails is acceptable.
  3. License Application Number: This number is found on the back of your “pretty” copy called “Certificate of Marriage”.  As a courtesy, I usually write this information down for my couples because there is too much going on at the moment of signing the documents to try to remember where that little number is.
  4. Groom’s Name: Groom, write your full legal name.
  5. Bride’s Name:  THIS IS IMPORTANT-BRIDES, WRITE DOWN YOUR MAIDEN NAME OR THE NAME YOU USED WHEN YOU APPLIED FOR YOUR LICENSE.  In other words, don’t write down your new married name.
  6. Date of Marriage:  I usually fill this in for the couple as well.
  7. Number of Certified copies:  I recommend 3-5 copies.  They are only $3.00 per copy so you may as well stock up.
  8. Finally, you will send a check that equals the number of copies you are ordering (5 copies = $15.00) to the address at the bottom of the form.

You will receive your certified copies in approximately two weeks; longer if it’s the middle of summer as the marriage licensing office gets swamped with paperwork this time of year.

Once you receive your certified copies of your marriage license, it’s time get started changing your name!  I hope this information was helpful.   I welcome your questions or comments!

Take me out to the Ball Game Wedding at Safeco Field!

When I first met with Robert and Melissa, they shared with me that their first date was at Safeco Field and that this was the venue they had chosen for their wedding.  I really had no idea what to expect because I have only been to one baseball game at the ballpark.  On their wedding day I was really excited to see what they put together for their ballpark themed wedding.

Robert and Melissa reserved a private room for their ceremony in the Ellis Pavilion (located at the Third Base Entrance to the ballpark).  They brought in dozens of baseballs and a jersey for their guests to sign rather than a traditional guest book.

Robert and Melissa’s ceremony included a cute story called “Love Monkey,” which was read by a family member.  When we got to the vows Robert and Melissa presented Robert’s daughter with a lovely ring symbolizing their new union as a family.   After the ceremony, the guests signed the baseballs and jersey and then headed up to the private suites for the reception.

While the guests headed up to the reception the wedding party stopped into the official Mariner’s interview room to sign the wedding license.  We all had fun pretending to be interviewed!

Robert and Melissa reserved two suites for their reception which overlooked the ballpark.  With a setting like this for your reception who needs decorations?   The guests were treated to food catered by the ballpark which included some traditional (hot dogs) and non-traditional (mac-n-cheese) favorites including a full bar.  Guests had their choice of sitting inside the suites to watch the game on several TV’s placed around the room or heading out to the deck that overlooked the ball park.  It was so fun eating a hotdog and watching the game just above 1st base!

I had a great time officiating Robert and Melissa’s wedding!  The venue, the food, and the entertainment added such a personal and fun touch to the day — certainly a wedding that the couple’s guests and I will not forget.  Congratulations Robert and Melissa!

Over the pass & thru the woods to Gini & Matt’s wedding!

Yesterday I drove to Cle Elum for Gini & Matt’s wedding at Suncadia resort.  Located just over Snoqualmie pass, Suncadia resort is tucked into a forest with beautiful surroundings including a winery, golf course and private homes that can be rented for your event.  Gini and Matt rented one of these beautiful lodge-like homes for their private wedding in the mountains that included about 30 of their family and friends.

When I walked in, it was so warm and comfortable.  A fire was going in the big rock fireplace and Gini and Matt had a video running on the big screen TV above the fireplace of themselves and different adventures they had been on together.

Food was catered by Debra Lane at Chef to Go.  Gini and Matt had requested an “upscale comfort food theme,” which Debra orchestrated brilliantly! Before the wedding, guests nibbled on a beautiful assortment of local cheeses and wine, and post wedding Debra put together a wide variety of items including tomato fennel soup with grilled gruyere cheese sandwiches, beef tenderloin crostini with caramelized onion jam and gorgonzola cheese, and Italian meatball sliders with provolone and parmesan cheese.   Special requests, such as gluten free items, were also provided by Debra.

The wedding was conducted upstairs from the balcony where the  guests down below could look up and see us.  Gini and Matt requested a short ceremony so they could focus more on their guests.  Right after the ceremony they came down, signed papers and came out to start the party!  Because of the intimate atmosphere of the lodge, guests could easily mingle around — picking up food or heading out to the deck overlooking the grounds.

I was truly inspired by the decorations, the food, Gini’s dress, Matt’s calm and the general happiness of everyone who traveled to this unique “real wedding” in the woods!  Congratulations Gini and Matt!

Last Minute Wedding? I can do it!

The couples I marry contact me with all different lead times for their wedding.  Sometimes I get the inquiry for my services months in advance — in fact I have already booked a wedding for 2013!  And other times I get a phone call from a couple who exclaims, “We want to get married as soon as possible”.  I will then ask, “how soon?”.  And they may answer tomorrow or next week or even next month.  That is what I often refer to as a “last minute wedding”.

A last minute wedding  can be any of the following:

  • You want a small, intimate wedding with just close friends
  • One or both of you have been called on military deployment
  • You eloped and now you want a real ceremony in front of friends and family
  • You want an understated but charming ‘second-time-around’ wedding
  • You need a perfectly planned, short-notice vow renewals ceremony
  • You pulled everything together at the last minute but you forgot to hire an officiant!

Whatever your situation, I can help!  Recently, I officiated a beautiful wedding for a small group of 20 at the Palisades Restaurant’s Magnolia room.  My couple called me a month in advance for what turned out to be a beautifully orchestrated day – with only a month’s planning.

This weekend I also had the pleasure of officiating a last minute wedding at Gasworks Park.  What an amazing day it was on top of the hill overlooking Lake Union.  The couple even brought their pooch, Bennett!
